Messy Room by Shel Silverstein
Whosever room this is should be ashamed!
His underwear is hanging on the lamp.
His raincoat is there in the overstuffed chair,
And the chair is becoming quite mucky and damp.
His workbook is wedged in the window,
His sweater's been thrown on the floor.
His scarf and one ski are beneath the TV,
And his pants have been carelessly hung on the door.
His books are all jammed in the closet,
His vest has been left in the hall.
A lizard named Ed is asleep in his bed,
And his smelly old sock has been stuck to the wall.
Whosever room this is should be ashamed!
Donald or Robert or Willie or--
Huh? You say it's mine? Oh, dear,
I knew it looked familiar!
*3 Reasons Why I Picked On This Poem*
- For me reading a poem is really difficult job. It has too much symbolic meanings that I have to figure out. The poem that I picked, "Messy Room", was really easy to read and to understand.
- This poem reminded me one of my friends' house. Her room was even messier than the room that is expressed in this poem. I could enjoy reading this poem without struggling with any of symbolic meanings.
- I thought the title would hook many readers at my age (teenagers) because most teens' rooms are untied and messy. The title caught my interest at once. This poem rhymes at the end, which we call "End Rhyme." Such as lamp-damp, floor-door, hall-wall, and so on. Another Poetic Device that was used was Imaginary."A lizard named Ed is asleep in his bed" strongly evoked one of my senses; seeing. The mood in this poem is very hilarious, and funny.

I agree with you, Rachel. When I was reading this poem, I kind of thought how the conditions of my rooms were (or our rooms!). This poem is also easy to read and definitely not hard to find symbollic meanings. Good job on analyzing your poem!
